Ulster Scots Cookery Masterclass with Jenny Bristow

Donaghadee Parish Church Hall 6.00pm to 9.30pm

Donaghadee 2012th Ulster Scots Festival starts with an Ulster-Scots themed Cookery Masterclass. The evening will be hosted by television celebrity cook Jenny Bristow one of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated local good food ambassador’s, TV cooks and cookery writers whose cookery programmes have travelled the world. The Masterclass programme brings together Jenny the Ambassador of Good Food and Ulster using local seasonal, prime produce, often organic, farm reared, artisan bakers and honestly sourced ingredients.

The Masterclass programme is also an opportunity to bring the best of locally sourced produce to the public and shows people how easily they can cook magnificent yet healthy food using local traditional ingredients. The Masterclass programme seeks to highlight farm quality assured produce from our shores and the demonstrations are totally married to local produce. The event also features a question and answer session where Jenny will try and answer any questions about the evenings recipe's and other cookery related questions. The evening will also feature traditional Ulster-Scots music from local group Keep Er Lit who play a number of tradtional instruments and are sure to get the audience's feet tapping. They recently featured on the UTV show, Paul and Nick's Big Food Trip which saw celebrity chefs Paul Rankin and Nick Nairn visit Donaghadee to prepare a gourmet feast for Keep Er Lit. The group is made up of a number of traditional musicians from the Ards Peninsula area whose passion for Ulster-Scots music shows in their performances.

Ulster Scots Cultural Day

Lemon's Wharf 10.00am to 4.00pm

Saturday will see a day with something for everyone, music, dance, historical lectures, displays and a children's fun day.
Lemon's Wharf is the venue for the an Ulster-Scots musical extravaganza. Willie Drennan's Ulster-Scots Band featuring local man Davy Angus will provide music, song and poetry and are certainly an act worth seeing.
Willie Drennan is a traditional musician, storyteller, poet and writer, who draws much of his material from the Ulster Scots cultural traditions of his native County Antrim. He presented a series of 8 television shows for BBC NI called, 'A Dander with Drennan' as well as writing a number of books and recording thirteen albums. His band is a group of professional performing artists who have emerged from the Ulster Scots Folk Orchestra in 1994 and who play regularly to packed houses in Northern Ireland and often travel abroad. Ballyrobert Drumming Club are a fife and drum club based at Ballyrobert just outside Bangor. It is made up of a number of experienced lambeg drummers and fifers who enjoy playing the traditional rythms and tunes associated with this fine Ulster-Scots tradition. They will play a number of tunes on both the Lambegs and Fifes and will be on hand to answer any questions about the instruments and the traditions behind them.

Una Breslins School of Irish Dancing will also be performing at the Festival, the school is based in Donaghadee and is made up of local children and young people of varying ages. The school is run by Una Gaskin ( nee Breslin ) who was herself a champion Irish dancer, the school have been very supportive of local cultural events over the last number of years and are sure to put on a good show.

As well as the music and dance at Lemon's Wharf there will also be lots to see at the Parish Church Hall. There will be a display of artefacts from the United Ulster History Forum who were founded in 2007 by a few history enthusiasts in the Ards Peninsula.Their collection contains historical artefacts from the Irish regiments within the British army, historical Police Service in Ireland and the United Irishmen.

Donaghadee Historical Society will also be in attendance for those who want to explore the local history of Donaghadee and surrounding areas. The Society was founded in 2001 by a number of historically- minded people and has as its objectives the promotion and encouragement of the study of history, folklore and antiquities in relation to local and national history. The North Down and Ards branch of the North Of Ireland Family History Society will also be there, the society had its beginnings in a family history group formed in Bangor in 1979. Over the years as the interest in genealogy has grown the group has been joined by other Branches in the North of Ireland to form the Society and now has hundreds of members worldwide. The objective of the Society is to foster an interest in family history with special reference to families who have roots in the North of Ireland and their descendants, wherever they may be. Mark Thompson is Managing Director of Mark Thompson Design a Graphic Design and Branding Consultancy. Outside of the world of design, in June 2005 he was appointed to the board of the Ulster-Scots Agency he was appointed Chairman in October 2005, a post he held until June 2009, having completed his full four year term. Mark was born and bred in the Ards, with a long family heritage in the area. He is dedicated to recovering important chapters of local Ulster-Scots history and making them more widely known. One such chapter is a booklet on Sir Thomas Smith's Forgotten English Colony of the Ards and North Down in 1572. It is about the failed attempt by Sir Thomas Smith and his son to colonise the Ards Peninsula and north Down, the scheme was abandoned in 1575.Mark researched, wrote and designed the booklet which was published by Loughries Historical Society. Mark Anderson has worked for the Ulster-Scots Agency since 2008 and is keen to help promote and develop the Fife & Lambeg Drum Tradition. Mark has been involved in various fife and drum programmes with schools, historical societys and community groups and is currently running a fife and drum class in Donaghadee Orange Hall, Moat Street every Tuesday.
Mark is a keen fifer and drummer outside his professional life as well and was a founder member of both Conlig and Ballyrobert Drumming Clubs. Find Out More about Mark Anderson.

Jack Greenald was born and brought up in Manchester, where he joined the Orange Order in 1985. He moved to Northern Ireland in December 1996.  He has written a number of articles on the history of Orangeism and Protestantism.  He wrote a chapter on Orangeism in the First World War for the book ‘Battles Beyond the Boyne’ and has also written booklets on the Protestant Martyrs and a biography of Rev R R Kane, a 19th century Grand Master of Belfast.  He is currently an Assistant Deputy Grand Secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, the Deputy County Grand Treasurer of County Down and the secretary of his private lodge, Banner of the Cross LOL 1310.


There will also be fun for the children with a number of inflatable games, slides and castles in the Church Hall car park, these will be fully supervised by fully qualified staff who have received all neccessary checks to ensure the safety and welfare of the children.

All Day Cafe

The Church Catering Committee will also be running an all day Cafe in the Church Hall where they will have tea, coffee, sandwiches and sausage rolls available, all proceeds will go to the Church Renewal and Renovation Fund.

Living History and Cultural Day

Donaghadee 12.00 to 5.30pm

Donaghadee plays host to this years North East Down Annual Boyne Anniversary Celebrations and this part of the Festival will hopefully compliment the "12th July Parade"

NIDS Prior to the parade there will be cartoon characters around the town to help keep the children entertained while waiting for the parade. The parade itself will be led by members of the North Irish Dragoons Society in late 17th century period costumes.The Society is a group of equestrian enthusiasts drawn from both communities of Northern Ireland irrespective of age, gender or religion who aim to provide a living history demonstration, by means of re-enactment; pageantry, educational and historical displays. They use historically accurate clothing and equipment in their demonstration to help educate their viewers of the history and life of the campaigning soldiers, such as dragoon, infantry and artillery during different periods.

There will be displays of horsemanship, musket and cannon firing as well as a period military encampment which be at The Commons area of Donaghadee part of which will also be used as a Demonstration Field for the Orange parade. Find Out More about the North Irish Dragoons Society.
